I am a full blood member of the Lower Brule Lakota Tribe. Although I do not have formal training, I have been creating artwork my entire life. I consider my talent a gift from the Creator, and it is something I never take for granted. In my work, I try always to bring my spiritual feelings for “Tunkasila” (The Great Spirit) into it and be guided by his direction. In the beginning years with my art, my grandfather told me that everything I create with my hands and mind should be created for Tunkasila, so that in the eyes of the people they would see beauty around them.
My artwork consists of many forms. I create paintings and drawings using earth paints, acrylics, pen and pencil; I also create artifacts that were once used by my ancestors, in the traditional manner in which they were once made. I create cultural pieces such as ceremonial and war shirts; shields both ceremonial and war; lances, clubs etc. using traditiona techniques and materials. I also create ceremonial robes from deer, elk, bear and buffalo with the theme of “the Circle of Life” and “the Red Road” that we all seek. These creations are a part of my spiritual awareness and my desire to share this awareness with others.
I am a traditionalist and my work and ability comes through Spirit and the teachings of my grandfather, who raised me. This I believe, is the strength of my art. I would like to see, in my lifetime, my work reach as many people as possible, in order to make a contribution to the great heritage of the life and culture of the Lakota people.
